Overview
Port-La Nouvelle is a French Mediterranean commercial Port which operates a wide range of commodities (liquid bulk, cereals, dry bulk, breakbulk and heavy lifts) and focuses on the Energy Transition. A new deep-sea port is currently under construction. It will increase the existing traffic and expand into new activities. The port will increase from 60 to 210 hectares with 1,700 m of additional quays. The water depth will reach 16 m to accommodate ships up to 60 to 80,000 dwt. This new infrastructure will allow the Port to support companies involved in marine renewables. A construction site of 7 hectares dedicated to the floating offshore wind farms industry has been already delivered in 2022. Port-La Nouvelle also expects to be a major port for hydrogen flows in the Mediterranean. A plant producing green hydrogen will start its activities in the coming years. Regarding the industrial goods and raw materials, the corresponding terminals will be operative in 2025-26 (dry bulk, liquid bulk and breakbulk). All facilities will propose 16 m water depth. Port-La Nouvelle thus intends to amplify its logistics role while taking up the challenge of decarbonization. The Port is owned by the Region Occitanie / Pyrénées-Méditerranée, second largest region in France. The Region has entrusted the port concession to the SEMOP, a semi-public Company. The SEMOP brings together the public actors (49%) such as the Region Occitanie and the Banque des Territoires with a group of private shareholders (51%). This private consortium consists of DEME CONCESSIONS (European operator of port concessions), EUROPORTS (international group of terminal operators), PMV (investment funds), QAIR (independent producer of renewable electricity) and the AUDE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. This organization is a new model of public/private governance in France. Port-La Nouvelle is the 1st French Port to be privately managed.
