Overview

Poppodium Romein is a concert venue situated in the town centre of Leeuwarden. The venue has a status of key venue in the Netherlands, meaning that the national cultural fund for music, dance and theatre (NFPK) acknowledges the professionalism of the company. Poppodium Romein is an official learning company for diverse practical studies and offers internships in all fields. Besides, most of the employees are volunteers. The location of the venue started off as a nun’s monastery around 1500 AD. These nun’s were members of the Benguine order, which declares the name of the street where Romein is situated: “Bagijnestraat”. Later the building became a reformed church and in 1850 it was heavily reconstructed by Leeuwarden’s city architect Thomas Romein. This is also the person the podium is still named after. The building still looks like a church on the outside, the inside looks a bit more modern, with a small modern-looking bar, separate from the main hall. In the main hall you can still see the church benches on the sides, which gives Poppodium Romein a unique and cosy character.
