Physical Synthesis is a design-led startup bringing sound closer to people through patented technology. Based in Brooklyn, New York and Portland, Oregon, we build state-of-the-art musical instruments for musicians and artists while providing hands-on sound solutions for the purpose of business and commercial applications. Our musical instruments are born from Atomic Force Microscopy, a process used in material discovery and other applications requiring very-high-resolution scanning. Through this process, we discovered and then developed powerful ways to control nonlinearities in mechanical systems for the realization of musical instruments and more specifically synthesizers. Our first acoustic synthesizer, Cicada, has been made available to the public in Q1 2021 and is available via our online store. In addition to development and engineering of these new musical instruments, we provide companies with cutting-edge sound solutions capable to enhance products and services across a diverse set of industries.
