Overview

New Netherland Timber Framing and Preservation strives to continue the traditions of craft and skill which have been handed down through generations. Whether the work is preservation of an existing structure or the creation of something new, we are dedicated to both the overall aesthetics of any structure, as well as the details which make it so special. It is our passion to support and improve the legacy of this world’s built heritage. When it comes to our preservation work I strive to remember that we are merely caretakers for future generations, therefore I strive to follow Didron’s maxim. “Il est preferable de conserver qu’a la reparation, mieux reparer que de restaurer, de mieux pour restaurer que de reconstruire.” “It is better to preserve than to repair, better to repair than to restore, better to restore than to reconstruct.” —A.N. Didron I believe in the value of the traditional trades and craft. Through contact and study of historical buildings and objects we are connecting with centuries of tradition. Traditional trades work may not be as fast as modern production trades, but the difference in end results is very apparent. As a worker, I believe in honest work for honest pay and as an employer, I believe in taking care of my employees. Many have concerns that the trades have been devalued in this country; our team at New Netherland Timber Framing is dedicated to reversing that trend. – Ian Stewart, Founder and Tradesman
