CONTEXT Legionella bacteria can cause Legionnaires’ disease, an often-severe pneumonia that frequently requires hospitalization. Conditions often found in building plumbing systems—stagnant, tepid water; lack of a disinfectant residual—act like an incubator and support the amplification of relatively-small numbers of Legionella into very large numbers. Legionella are part of a complex microbial ecosystem, in which biofilm and protozoa play a defining role.
