Overview

Microcell Corporation began its operation in 2000 after receiving initial seed funding from Advanced Energy Corporation. Subsequent to developing the first laboratory prototypes, the company received $2 million in funding from the National Institute of Standards and Technology – Advanced Technology Program followed by an investment from Pepco Holdings, Inc. in 2001. In the following years, other nationally recognized electric utilities such as Progress Energy, American Electric Power, Dominion, Duke Energy, and the North Carolina Electric Cooperatives joined Microcell’s network of investors and partners. Over the past decade Microcell has continued to evolve its technology in collaboration and guidance from its electric utility partners. Microcell's headquarters and research & development are located in a modern facility in the Research Triangle area of North Carolina. In February of 2007, the company acquired an 80,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Robersonville, North Carolina. While capable of producing the world’s smallest fuel cell, Microcell’s focus is currently on the production of fuel cells for distributed generation and vehicular applications.
