Overview

Michigan State's Department of Sociology has a long and rich tradition of scholarship and teaching. We are on the forefront of innovative research that presses sociological understanding and produces scholars who confront global social problems. Our doctoral program attracts candidates from around the world. We conduct research to the highest international standard, and are routinely ranked in the top 50 sociology programs in the world. At present, we have 28 doctoral candidates and over 100 undergraduate students. Our research focuses on three main specializations: migration, environment, and health and medicine. Members of the Michigan State University Department of Sociology are engaged in a wide variety of research projects locally, throughout the U.S., and internationally. Many of their studies are interdisciplinary in nature, involving collaboration with scholars at MSU and other universities as well as a wide range of community members ranging from policy makers and activists to technical experts.
