Overview

Merseyrail is one of the most punctual and reliable rail networks in the UK, with consistently high scores for passenger satisfaction and national award wins for customer service. The self-contained network has some of the most affordable fares in the country and operates over 600 regular services per day, every 15 minutes, to 69 stations throughout the Liverpool City Region, including four underground stations in the city centre that receive services every few minutes. The network carries over 90,000 passengers on an average weekday, with its Liverpool Central station being one of the busiest outside of London. In 2023 Merseyrail began the introduction of a new fleet of trains, the Class 777s built by Stadler. The new trains are safer – most notably in the ease in which everyone can get on and off, with step-free access thanks to a sliding step. It will make Merseyrail the most accessible, traditional network in the country. The trains are able to carry 50% more passengers while retaining the same number of seats. This will help them better cater for rising passenger numbers, both now and in the future. The new trains will have more space for bikes, buggies, disabled passengers and luggage; intelligent air conditioning; a bright, open and airy saloon. Merseyrail are focused on providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly transport system for the Liverpool City Region. From 2014 to 2022 there has been a 67% reduction in Carbon emissions across the network. There has been a 34% reduction in stations electricity usage since 2014. Merseyrail Electrics (2002) is a 50/50 joint venture company between Serco and Transport UK, which has a 25 year concession agreement with Merseytravel, the transport authority in Merseyside. The concession started on 20 July 2003, with review dates every five years. Approximately 1,200 people work at Merseyrail.
