Overview

The Laboratory of Maritime Archaeology is the first maritime archaeology research unit in Montenegro, established within the Centre for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Faculty of Maritime Studies of University of Montenegro. The mission of the Laboratory of Maritime Archaeology is to foster research in maritime archeology, support policy development and make the underwater cultural heritage of Montenegro accessible to the public by applying state-of-the-art methodology and the highest scientific standards for prospection, documentation and promotion of maritime archaeological and underwater cultural heritage sites. Through its educational activities, the Laboratory for Maritime Archeology will support development of the institutional capacities for use of innovative research methods and digital documentation of underwater cultural heritage, its national and international promotion and popularization through intersectoral and interinstitutional cooperation. Through a multidisciplinary approach, it will uphold a greater international academic presence of Montenegrin researchers in the field of sciences relevant to underwater research. It will have a positive impact on the implementation of the provisions of the UNESCO 2001 Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage and the touristic valorization of underwater cultural heritage through diving tourism. The Laboratory of Maritime Archaeology is equipped with an 8,5 meters boat powered by twin outboard engines, equipment for technical diving, full underwater photogrammetry data acquisition set, remote sensing equipment (SSS and MBES), laser scanner and 3D printers, workstations for data processing and analysis.
