IPA - Portuguese Institute of Aphasia

Civic and Social Organizations

Overview

The Portuguese Institute of Aphasia (IPA) is a non-profit organization with a social mission that aims to improve the quality of life and social inclusion of people with aphasia and their families. We intend to bring to Portugal innovative therapeutic alternatives that minimize the psychosocial impact of aphasia on the life of the person and its family. OUR MISSION? Promote the improvement of the quality of life of people with aphasia and their families in Portugal. HOW DO WE DO IT? The person is placed at the center of decision making, and their personal needs and goals for social participation are the focus of intervention. WE INVOLVE the family and friends of the person with aphasia, offering them support, guidance, and empowerment. WE INSERT ourselves in the community context and in a logic of proximity and partnership. WE WANT to contribute to improving the communicative accessibility of services and equipment so that these people can exercise their citizenship autonomously. We base our intervention on the vast experience of international organizations that have been working with this model for more than three decades and that proves its effectiveness. WE BELIEVE that this internationally recognized approach - Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) - can make a difference in the lives of Portuguese people with aphasia. WE WILL promote social transformation through the inclusion of people with aphasia. THREE axes of IPA's intervention: » People with aphasia: More well-being. More interaction. New opportunities for social participation. » Family and friends: More support. More empowerment. More partnership in the recovery process. » Society: More information and knowledge about aphasia. More communicative accessibility. More inclusion. Life is Bigger than Aphasia!
