Overview

The International Mining for Development Centre (IM4DC) is a joint venture between The University of Western Australia (UWA) and The University of Queensland (UQ), and is funded by the Australian Government through an Australian Aid initiative. IM4DC was established to facilitate the development of world-class mining practice to improve social and economic benefit. Commencing operations in October 2011, IM4DC is a key element of Australia's Mining for Development initiative, which provides developing countries with access to Australian and international expertise and experience to develop their mining sectors and contribute to sustainable development outcomes for their nations and people. IM4DC collaborates with others to harness the intellectual capital existing in the Australian resources and higher education sectors to increase knowledge, experience and skill levels of key personnel within governments, universities, research institutions and civil society organisations in developing countries. Our goals are to: improve policies and practices in the governance and management of extractive industries and their interactions with society and the environment; improve legislative frameworks; improve knowledge of a country's resources base; and to enable countries to continue to build local capacity in minerals governance and mining.
