Before the creation of Gran Retto, there was Tri-Racing, a swimming and triathlon academy well-known in Veracruz leaded by Mario Villarreal Quiroz who is a high-performance swim coach and state sport award winner from Mexico. Tri-Racing started organizing swim trainings in the sea for its own people, swimming the way from the coast and back to the isle of "Sacrificios" located in Veracruz in an effort to satisfy their people thirst for more challenging and gratifying experiences than just swim in the pool. The experience and safety in the Tri-Racing's trainings were so good that the word spread through somes of Mexico's swimming teams and few years later, the Tri-Racing's trainings in the sea managed to gather more than 300 people from many places of Mexico without any kind of marketing strategy. In 2013 Mario Villarreal formalizes the Tri-Racing's sea swim training and organizes the open water swimming event "1er Gran Travesía Veracruz" with almost 600 participants swimming the original route of Tri-Racing's training but with the presentation and technology required for a high-performance sport event. Gran Retto was officially born in 2014 as the brand to highlight the events organized by the people behind the scenes of Tri-Racing's trainings and it is from 2015 that Gran Retto begins to acquire its own technology and equipment for the organization of massive events and starts to sell its sports organization services.
