Overview

Family of Disabled (FOD) was founded by Dr. Rajinder Johar in 1992. He was an occupational therapist with 20 years of experience from King George’s Medical College, Lucknow. He was rendered bed-ridden for life following a gun-shot injury to his cervical spine. As a quadriplegic (paralysis of all the four limbs); he decided to not to succumb to his condition but gather all his force and bounce back and spread that life-giving force among thousands of people with disabilities. He believed that he survived the accident as his mission in this life was not over yet. He put his academic and professional knowledge and vast experience to good use, and set out on a mission to rehabilitate people living with disabilities by assessing their pressing needs and introducing programmes to meet those needs. As a medical professional, he could sympathise with them, but after acquiring disability, he could now also empathize with people stuck on crossroads of various disabilities. He planned ways and means for their holistic rehabilitation and emerged with most unique and exclusive schemes. Starting with a single project in 1992, FOD introduced an array of programmes to PwDs under Dr. Johar’s able guidance, expertise and stewardship. Economic rehabilitation of people with disabilities is at the core of the organisation. We have a self-employment programme called Apna Rozgaar Scheme under which PwDs living in poor socio-economic conditions are helped to start/ expand their petty trades. FOD sponsors/ assists students with disabilities in attaining quality education.
