Overview

fairplay is the initiative for diversity and anti-discrimination in sport. It is one of three departments at the Vienna Institute for International Dialogue and Cooperation (VIDC). The fairplay Initiative was founded in 1997 during the European Year against Racism. In 1999, fairplay launched the Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network in Vienna. fairplay facilitates dialogue and networking activities and supports emancipatory and participatory initiatives in sport. fairplay acts as an advisory body and center of competence with a focus on anti-discrimination, social inclusion, human rights and development. Aims of the fairplay Initiative • Strengthening public awareness by initiating a broad and media-effective commitment for diversity and anti-discrimination; • Creating awareness in the football and sports community (officials, players, coaches, fans and sports journalists) for anti-racist and anti-discriminatory content; • Promotion of a differentiated reflection on the phenomenon of sport and football on a national and international expert level, thereby demonstrating positive strategies against open and everyday discrimination inside and outside the football stadiums; • Support of marginalized groups (migrants, young people, fans) in their active participation. The fairplay Initiative is funded by the Austrian Ministry of Sports, Austrian Development Cooperation (ADA), the European Commission within the framework of the ERASMUS + sports program and the City of Vienna, in addition fairplay receives support by UEFA.
