Overview

Every Woman Treaty is a campaign for a global treaty to end violence against women and girls. We're a diverse coalition of 1,700 women’s rights advocates from 128 nations, including 840 organizations. We envision a world where every woman and girl can realize her right to a life free from violence. Violence against women and girls is the most widespread human rights violation happening today. At least 1 in 3 women experience violence, or 35 percent of women around the world. Despite the size and scope of the problem, violence against women is solvable. Research shows that when nations implement evidence-based interventions, rates of violence plummet. How do we get nations to implement these interventions? A global treaty. At present, the current tools in place—a UN declaration on violence against women, and a general recommendation on violence against women—are not legally binding. A new treaty would create a legal mandate at the global level for nations to act on violence against women. The new treaty would require nations to: - Reform laws - Train police, judges, doctors, nurses and hold them accountable - Hold violence prevention campaigns and trainings - Offer services to survivors - Allocate funds for these interventions With a treaty, we change the global norm from a system of silence into one of accountability and safety, changing the lives of women, girls, families, communities, and ultimately, nations and the world.
