Overview

Everything is interconnected: from the trees that green our concreted landscapes; to the invisible particles in the air we breathe; to the chemical cycles in the soil beneath our feet that nurture the food we eat. That is why we bring together expertise in physics, chemistry, microbiology, social science, geography, economics, health, and policy analysis to answer big questions about the environment and us. ENVS represents a range of research across natural and social science disciplines, united by a common focus on tackling global and local challenges linked to the deteriorating state of the environment. Through interdisciplinary research and international collaboration, we are committed to generating the knowledge and solutions needed to understand our planet and its climate and help us move forward sustainably. Alongside basic and applied research activities in the lab, office, and in the field, we advise government ministries, regional and local-level governing bodies, as well as private companies. Our department is also committed to contributing to the training and education of the scientists and environmental decision-makers of the future. We value our workplace as a vibrant community of staff and students, where we strive to keep up a good working atmosphere through encouraging a good work-life balance, and fostering values of diversity, equality, and inclusion. The Department for Environmental Science, ENVS, is part of Aarhus University’s Faculty of Technical Sciences, and is located close to the city of Roskilde on the edge of Roskilde Fjord in Denmark’s Zealand region.
