Emmaus International

Overview

Founded in 1971 by Abbé Pierre, Emmaus International is a movement based on solidarity, which fights against poverty and exclusion. It brings together 350 organisations in 37 countries, spread over four continents. Although these organisations exist in very different social, economic and political contexts, they share the values of welcoming those in need, solidarity, openness, respect and sharing. They also all share the same objective: taking action against the causes of poverty and bringing about social change by allowing the most impoverished people to take control of their own lives. Emmaus organisations worldwide lead campaigns and take action as part of three struggles for basic human rights: an ethical and solidarity economy, social and environmental justice, and freedom of movement and of residence for universal citizenship. Sole heir of Abbé Pierre, Emmaus International has the responsibility to preserve and bring to life the legacy of Abbé Pierre and the struggles he led unremittingly throughout his life.
