Overview

The European Council of Spatial Planners – Conseil Européen des Urbanistes (ECTP-CEU) was established in 1985 to define the role of a ‘professional planner’ and provide its members with a common framework to increase the visibility of planners and recognise their important societal role. Built into the international declaration of 1985 was the acknowledgement that different states have different approaches to planning – all equally significant. It is an umbrella organisation, open to all the associations of planning in the 46 countries of the Council of Europe, as well as to other stakeholders who have a role in promoting best practice in spatial planning. It rewards examples of good planning all over Europe, and regularly publishes information and manifestos around current issues. The ECTP-CEU encourages the participation of young planners, and annually holds a workshop to which all young planners from across Europe are invited to present their work (see related LinkedIn page: ECTP-CEU Young Planners Network). Through the promotion of high-quality education, continuing professional development and a commitment to ethics and professional responsibilities, the ECTP-CEU aims to achieve mutual recognition for planners across Europe. It engages in dialogue with local, national, and European governments, as well as with research institutes, universities, and partners with related interests in the many facets of planning in the built and natural environment. ECTP-CEU welcomes new members with whom it can work to increase the profile of spatial planning. We also have a page for Young Planners.
