The Department of Statistics of the Federal University of Bahia (DEst-UFBA) was created in 1975, and in 1983 the Bachelor of Statistics course was created, with the first class starting in March 1984. In 2015, the Statistics concentration area was created in the Master's program in Mathematics at UFBA. The Department of Statistics currently has 26 professors. Their research areas include applied statistics, statistical modeling, data science, survival analysis, Bayesian inference, classical inference, stochastic processes, regression models, generalized linear models, time series, multivariate statistics, biostatistics, probability, theory of distributions, design of experiments, sampling, statistical learning, and neural networks.
