Overview

The Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Sheffield has built a reputation for world leading research in the areas of electromagnetics, semiconductors and communications. 96 per cent of our research is rated in the highest two categories in the REF 2021 meaning it is classed as world-leading or internationally excellent. We are ranked among the top 10 UK EEE Departments (QS World Universities 2021). We have been at the forefront of research and teaching within the field of electrical engineering for over a century, and in electronics since its advent in the mid 20th century. In that time the use of electronics has become mainstream requiring challenges to be overcome to provide solutions for everyday needs. Our academics are major contributors to tackling key technological challenges including renewable energy generation, distribution and storage, 5G radio communications and electric transport. Our students learn from academic experts who have strong links with partners in industry, and our state-of-the-art laboratories allow them to get hands on with equipment used in industry as preparation for their careers. The most recent National Student Survey 2022 also saw the Department ranked in the top five in the Russell Group for student satisfaction.
