Overview
Decarcerate Indiana challenges the belief that cages, coercion, and confinement keep our community safe. Decarcerate Indiana believes people are safe when they have their basic needs met and when they feel empowered and free. We began as Decarcerate Monroe County in 2008 in response to the city's proposal to build a justice campus. That plan, which we ultimately defeated, was strikingly similar to the current proposal in Marion County. In response to the numerous proposals across the state for new detention facilities, we are expanding our efforts to encompass all of Indiana, and we stand in solidarity with abolitionists everywhere.
