Connected Signals

Overview

Future Proof Transit with Existing Infrastructure: Connected Signals collects real-time traffic signal data and uses it to build sophisticated models for predicting traffic signal changes, based on history, vehicle and pedestrian calls, and other information. This information enables applications that increase safety at intersections, improve fuel economy and reduce emissions, and reduce driver stress. Major automakers, including BMW, Audi, and Toyota, estimate that a 7-10% improvement in fuel efficiency and emissions can be achieved using this data. At the juncture of big data, connected vehicles/mobile, and the internet of things, we use existing infrastructure to communicate with traffic controllers and vehicles, without the need for the expensive municipal and in-vehicle equipment required by other connected vehicle approaches. With nearly 10,000 signals in over 100 US municipalities, Australia, and New Zealand already online and many more in various stages from acquisition to deployment, Connected Signals is the leading source of traffic signal data, providing added value to manufacturers, drivers and local traffic agencies. Our EnLighten® smartphone app already provides drivers with predictions about how long they will be stopped at lights, and we are actively developing exciting new applications. Our business model involves rapidly expanding our signal coverage across the United States and internationally, and marketing the resulting predictive data stream to automakers, traffic data providers, map data providers, and insurance companies, among others. We have completed prototype development projects with BMW, Toyota, and Nissan, with more in progress. An application for the BMW infotainment unit, jointly developed with BMW has been released in Eugene and Portland, with more cities to come.
