Christian Legal Fellowship (CLF)

Religious Institutions

Overview

CLF is Canada’s national association of Christian lawyers, law students, and academics. We have 700 members in local chapters meeting in cities across the nation, and law student chapters in most law schools in Canada. CLF was founded in the mid 1970’s out of the conviction that for the Christian lawyer, the practice of law is a vocation, a calling from God. As Christian lawyers, we are concerned with legal and constitutional questions facing our profession and the broader community. We believe it is our responsibility to work with others to determine what justice requires in a free and democratic society. While having no direct denominational affiliation, CLF members represent more than 30 Christian denominations working in association together. We encourage and equip our members to do justice and show compassion. CLF is a registered charity and fulfills its mandate by presenting national conferences and seminars, publishing newsletters and the quarterly Christian Legal Journal, establishing and supporting local groups and chapters, and participating in public life through education and advocacy. This includes, where appropriate, intervening in litigation as a friend of the court in those cases where the public good can be advanced by presenting principles of law and moral, legal, and political philosophy that are consistent with, and illuminated by, Christianity. CLF is also a Non-governmental organization (NGO) in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
