A Global Learning Xprize Finalist, Chimple Learning is an app from Sutara Learning Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the foundational education of children. Chimple is an early learning educational app, available for free on google play store and can be accessed on any android device. Chimple app aims to make basic reading, writing, digital skills & math fun and interactive for students aged 3-8 years. The app is designed to bring high-quality learning experiences to all the students in a gamified manner – regardless of access to school or other educational resources. Its personalized and adaptive learning system guides a child from absolutely no knowledge of learning to a stage where the child can read to learn and perform basic arithmetic. They can become literate and well versed in basic education either on their own or in a classroom. The idea of designing the app is to have a minimum adult intervention so that children could learn through self-intervention. Chimple Learning app was created for the Global Learning XPRIZE competition, which challenges teams from around the world to develop open-source and scalable software that will enable children in developing countries to teach themselves basic reading, writing, and arithmetic. With the help of UNESCO, a field trial of Chimple software was conducted in Tanzania for 15 months, during which children aged 7-10 have shown impressive learning gains. Among the field of 198 teams from 40 countries, Chimple learning was one of the five of the finalists. Chimple Learning app has been chosen as the top educational product in the Artificial Intelligence Innovation Challenge 2019 held by MahaIT. With support from BMC, we have been conducting a pilot of Chimple Literacy and Numeracy learning program in 10 BMC schools around Chembur and Govandi from September 2019 till the March 2020 lockdown. The project has impacted 1698 students and we have trained 47 teachers on tablet-based educational intervention.
