Overview
China’s economy is a fascinating field of study for students and scholars alike. A shift in the drivers of economic growth, the centrally orchestrated transition from a planned to a market economy, as well as its opening to global markets have been particularly influential for China's modernization experience over the past decades. Today, China is an important destination for and source of foreign direct investment; Chinese firms compete for influence in global value chains, financial markets and technological leadership. At the same time, in the face of environmental damage, energy and resource scarcity, as well as persistent social inequalities, it has become obvious that China’s model of economic development needs major adaptions. By combining economic and political analysis with Chinese studies, our team at the Chair of China Business and Economics in Würzburg is deeply involved in uncovering answers to some of the most critical questions surrounding China's increasing economic power and its influence in international politics, innovation, standard setting and production processes. Our contributions to knowledge and science have been showcased in the multitude of publications since the founding of the chair and the inception of the study program in 2012.
