Overview

The Carefish/catch project is an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of animal welfare in fisheries, which has been largely overlooked in public discourse and purchasing decisions. The project is being developed by an international consortium, led by fair-fish International and including the Fish Ethology and Welfare Group, Centre of Marine Sciences, Friend of the Sea, and DeMoS Institute. The team intends to assess the various impacts of fisheries on fish welfare and identify the most promising areas for reducing animal suffering in different fisheries and for different species. The results of this assessment will be used to develop guidelines and financial viability studies for changes in fishing practices. By incorporating science-based criteria for animal welfare into the Friend of the Sea certification scheme, the Carefish/catch project is taking a pioneering approach to promoting responsible fishing practices. This effort has the potential to increase public awareness of the importance of animal welfare in fisheries and promote more sustainable and ethical practices in the industry
