Overview

Cancer United was established in 2012 by Jan Sheward following her diagnosis of breast cancer as a local support group (known as an ‘Active Recovery Club’) It achieved charity status in 2014. There are now two Active Recovery Clubs, the UK’s first cancer-specific exercise programme - CU Fitter™ - as well as an accredited CU Fitter training course for Personal Trainers, Physiotherapists , swimming teachers and healthcare practitioners. It operates the UK’s first cancer specific gym. The Cancer United vision puts cancer patients’ wellbeing at the heart of the system, signposting them at the point of diagnosis to opportunities that can improve their emotional and physical health. The unique model of Cancer United facilitates cancer specific exercise, peer support and information exchange in a community environment where the emphasis is on social interaction and having fun. Members enjoy being part of a Choir, a Walking Football Team, Gym based exercise in their own cancer specific gym and taking part in social outgoings on their two mini buses sometimes including their support and information bus.
