BiON plc is one of Malaysia’s most established environmental engineering and renewable energy solutions providers. Today, BiON is leveraging its extensive experience in wastewater treatment and waste-to-energy to focus on building and operating biogas power plants to generate renewable energy from the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME). The biogas power plants, which are located on or near the site of a palm oil mill, capture the greenhouse gases (namely, methane) released by the POME and convert this into electricity. BiON develops the plants either as an Independent Power Producer (IPP) – selling power to the grid – or as an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contractor for the mill owner. As an IPP, BiON currently has two fully-owned grid-connected biogas power plants in Malaysia: a 2.0MW plant at Malpom, Penang and a 2.0MW plant at Kahang, Johor. Over the last four decades, as an EPCC contractor, BiON has delivered over 140 environmental engineering projects in Malaysia and elsewhere in Asia. This includes commissioning more than 30 anaerobic reactors for the rubber and palm oil sectors, and the construction of 19 digesters for numerous types of wastewater treatment plants. BiON serves a diverse clientele and works with numerous strategic partners, both government agencies and private organisations, such as FGV Holdings Bhd, Sime Darby Bhd, FELCRA Bhd, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd, Safeskin Latex (Thailand) Ltd, General Rubber Corporation of Vietnam and ADS Singapore Pte. Ltd. BiON is listed on the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange and trades under the symbol ‘BION’.
