'Baobei' means baby, loved one, and something sacred. We collect unsold beads from retail stores and craft them into fun, thoughtful and unique jewelry. "My parents have been running the same retail store in Wellington for over 20 years. One thing they sell is beads - heaps, like a shit tonne, and the unsustainable thing about retail is dead stock. These beads were so beautiful I couldn’t bear to see them go to waste, sitting unused in the back of a warehouse. So I gave these beads a new life and I started Baobei. I wanted Baobei to be sustainable and I wanted it to feel nostalgic. I want everyone wearing Baobei (colourful or plain, simple or bold) to feel like they’re honouring the most authentic version of themselves.
