Overview

THE VIRTUES OF FINANCE (UTS HREC REF NO. 2014000144) The Global Financial Crisis (GFC) that came to a head in 2008 has clearly been the major event in the financial world in recent times. The aim of The Virtues in Finance project is to conduct conversations with key people in the industry to distil ideas about the key lessons that have been learnt from the recent financial crisis. Understanding how rhetoric and behaviours have changed or not as a result of the GFC and its aftermath will also be a key area of research. Semi-structured interviews will be conducted with key stakeholders within the financial sector. Participants will be drawn from amongst people with a significant level of experience and understanding of the values and workings of the financial industry. Indicators of such experience and knowledge will be demonstrated by a minimum of 5 years of employment in a senior position within the following professions: Financial Academics (with publications in the area); Financial Regulators; Senior Finance Executives; Front Line Traders (in industry leading financial institutions) and Business Journalists (in reputable media organizations). Interviews will be conducted in New York, London, Lisbon and Sydney. Hence, two sets of interviews will be conducted with personnel in the heartland of the crisis’ engine room – New York and London; one set will be conducted in one of the Eurozone’s more troubled regions, Lisbon, and one set will be conducted in an area that largely escaped the crisis, Sydney. The data will be recorded and transcribed and the pool of researchers involved should ensure a large database. The timeline for the interviews is through to the end of February 2015. Analysis will be ongoing through 2015 with expected conference presentations in 2015 and journal submissions in 2015-2016.
