Overview

Region wide service to support families/whānau that care for someone with a mental distress, addiction or suicide. Our aim is to give families the strength and skills they need for a better life experience at home, in the community and at work. Able family/whānau services are located region wide with fieldworkers who offer a free, confidential and mobile service of information, education, support and advocacy. Family/whānau services also include support for children or young people affected by a parent/siblings mental health and/or addiction with the CUMIA programme which can be a group based or individual programme. Able offers support to people affected by a mental illness through the Focus Vocational services. Community based Activity Centres are available in Alexandra and Dunedin encouraging people to learn new skills and reconnect with their communities through a range of onsite and offsite activities. Able has a clinical Supporting Parents Healthy Children Co-ordinator who will assist to strengthen family/whānau centred “best practice” at the personal, service practice and organisational level to meet SPHC Guidelines. Able provides an 8-week education programme (Waves) that aims to support adults 18+ years old who have been bereaved by suicide. Able will work with communities to promote mental health and wellbeing and support family/whānau, friends and others affected by suicide or suicidal behaviours. Able Timeout Carers provides individual supervised contact for children who have been exposed to issues around separation from significant people in their lives in Invercargill and Central Otago.
