Covered health care at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune, a digital-first newsroom. Exposed Louisiana hospitals’ practice of billing rape victims for their forensic medical exams, prompting the governor to issue two executive orders and state lawmakers to pass legislation reforming how sex assault victims are treated. Other work included a focus on mental health, patient safety and a hospital fungal outbreak that contributed to the deaths of five children. Also chronicled the intimate journey of a group of women from across the U.S. who returned to Louisiana to report sexual abuse they say happened to them while residents at New Bethany Home for Girls, a now- closed religious reform school in north Louisiana that was open for 30 years despite multiple investigations into its activities.

    • Charter School Reporting Corps Editor

Edited and coordinated the Charter School Reporting Corps for New Orleans’ first independent, nonprofit news site. Oversaw 16+ freelancers charged with reporting on 42 charter school boards that governed the city’s then-73 public charter schools. In my short time, raised the journalistic standard of the work, largely produced by citizen journalists. Also mentored those who were more experienced as they tackled more complicated stories. Garnered a reputation at Florida’s largest newspaper as a versatile, go-to reporter, adept at covering education, crime, courts, state and local politics, hurricanes, human interest and more. While writing about K-12 education, I delved into taxes, homeschoolers, school board elections and school grades. I spent five years covering crime in the paper’s fast-paced Tampa office. I explored the workings and claims of the nation’s largest and fastest-growing state virtual school. Spent almost two weeks in New Orleans covering Hurricane Katrina and later became the Times’ point person for related coverage, including some spot news on the BP Oil Spill.
