In November 2015, I began a youth orchestra program at Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish for children ages 6-17. The initial 12-member ensemble now has a roster with twice as many members, and we are performing full-length concerts after only 5 months of rehearsals. Our current repertoire contains classical standards, hymns, folk songs, and contemporary compositions, with pedagogical supplements, including the technique-building String Basics method. Our first full concert in April 2016 was an enormous success; the repertoire included hymns (e.g. "Come Thou Fount" (Nettleton) and classical themes (Largo from New World Symphony by Dvorak). Now, we look to the next chapter: homophonic and polyphonic textures, advancements in our note-reading abilities, and extending the invitation to youth wind and brass players in the community. The orchestra is always accepting new members, from beginners with no experience to advanced and from youth to adults! This orchestra program is open to ANYONE in the Knoxville area. Those who are interested in joining an orchestra program are invited to contact me or the parish office for further information! Show less
