Dr Meghann Ormond is a fascinating scholar. She combines a gentle sensitive touch to human and community issues with a steely passion and rigour for truth, justice and care. An inspirational teacher, coach and friend. An uncompromising researcher and project leader.

Meghann Ormond has been my lecturer and supervisor during my MSc thesis at Wageningen University & Research. I got to know Meghann as an exceptionally inspiring and passionate lecturer. The effort put into getting across complex social science theories and stimulating critical engagement with them was beyond what I experienced from other lecturers. Simultaneously, she managed to consider and be alert to the individual needs of every student in the course. During the thesis process, her encouraging way of supervising and genuine interest in my work and personal development helped me deliver a final product that surpassed by far my initial expectations. Meghann consistently and authentically embraces collaborative research practices by making everybody involved in the process feel equally important, as she does inter alia in the context of her extracurricular project Migrantours in Utrecht. It was a formative and enriching experience to work with Meghann and I hope we will cross paths again in the future.

My experience of working with Meghann on the Migrantour Sustainable Routes project has been a truly inspiring one. Meghann uses her strong organizational and analytical skills to effectively bring structure into the Migrantour international network. Moreover, Meghann uses her strong facilitation skills to ensure participation when working with groups, the benefit of which I have directly observed during the Migrantour international network coordination meeting. Meghann has efficiently guided me during my internship with de Voorkamer and Migrantour, and in doing so has ensured that the training toolkit for the Migrantour network encompasses a comprehensive package of theoretical and practical knowledge. Besides being extremely hard-working and intelligent, Meghann is also a wonderful person to work with due to her empathetic and facilitating leadership style. If the opportunity arises, I will not hesitate to work together with Meghann again.

I regularly develop and support initiatives together with non-governmental organisations, policymakers and industry actors on issues related to migrant heritage, health equity and accessible tourism. The author of over 35 peer-reviewed publications as well as curator and co-founder of initiatives like Roots Guide and Migrantour Utrecht, I also try my best to bring about a more humane kind of university in which people of diverse backgrounds can learn from one another and thrive. In light of this, I am co-founder and co-coordinator of the CSPS Transformative Learning Hub at WUR, a member of the Wageningen Young Academy, and a board member and co-developer of Centre for Unusual Collaboration (CUCo)'s Spark interdisciplinary research training programme. I also develop, coordinate and teach on MSc- and PhD-level courses in the philosophy of social science and (transformative and participatory) qualitative research methods. As part of a research group coordinated by Maria Lucinda Fonseca, I contributed to studies addressing community-making in new low-income social housing developments in the Lisbon metropolitan area, the policy mechanics of family reunification and the everyday lived experiences of immigrant families in Portugal. In these studies, I undertook qualitative and quantitative research and analyses and contributed to writing up and presenting the studies' findings for international and national policy-making audiences. Our research in the latter project was used to inform evidence-based migration policy-making on family reunification, ultimately leading to legislative changes that enabled immigrants' dependents to qualify for residency visas independent from those of their sponsors, thus reducing situations of exploitation and abuse in cases of relationship break-down. At CEG, I was also an active contributor to the EU's International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion (IMISCOE) network and the International Metropolis Project. I served on the conference secretariat for the 11th International Metropolis Conference in 2006, which was attended by over 1000 delegates. As part of the secretariat, I was involved in the selection and coordination of the scientific programme, pre-conference activities, plenary sessions and workshops, the design of conference promotional materials, and the training and on-site management of 20 event volunteers. For IMISCOE, I handled the coordination of activities, deliverables and members’ contributions for the ‘Social Integration and Mobility, Education, Housing and Health’ research cluster and research contributor to the Migrant Health Working Group. These experiences familiarised me with EU project culture and regulations, and led me to establish good working relationships with scholars and administrators in the field of migration studies throughout the EU.
