My work as a Systems Architect / Staff Engineer at Plee involved both direct collaboration with engineering teams across the organization, as well as working on strategic, cross-cutting concerns and projects related to architecture and technology. In my direct work with teams I provided advice and feedback on design documents and software in general. I worked with them to understand what they're solving for the business and how that relates to the designs they proposed, to understand risks and implementation options, connect them with other stakeholders across the company doing similar things and more. This led to a variety of outcomes from designs radically changing in favor of simplified approaches, to using re-design as an opportunity to get rid of painful technical debt, or even simply helping validate a chosen approach to something very complex and helping sponsor and support the team to help it succeed. As part of broader strategic work I helped identify pain points and opportunities facing Pleo now and particularly in the future. This has e.g., been part of the formation of an Engineering Productivity domain/area, as well as an Architecture Team tasked specifically with working on key pain points in the software architecture across all teams, such as tight coupling, API structure and alignment and similar.Lastly I drove projects that had impact across all of our teams, such as one on DORA metrics. My role in that project was to ensure the success of the project through: 1) advising and mentoring the team on architecture and implementation, 2) ensuring scope and outcome and day-to-day project management, and 3) product management work to ensure we delivered something that provided real, tangible value to teams. I led the early-stage data team at Pleo, wearing the hats of both technical lead, product manager and day-to-day manager. During this time I am particularly proud of three things:* We introduced dbt as a way to codify and structure the growing analytics needs within Pleo. My work here involved architecting the first iteration of this solution involving BigQuery, dbt, many external and internal data sources, GCP permissions and resources and more, both as architect and co-implementor. I worked to help identify and facilitate key business usecases needed by the growing analytics area within the company.* We implemented a CDC-based data pipeline to move data from our internal services to our data warehouse. My role in this was to help drive the project (roadmap, goals, ...), manage stakeholders, as well as responsibility for the architecture of the solution as a whole. During my time on this I helped lay the implementation groundwork, as well as discuss and explore different solutions to a wide range of problems that crop up when working with data pipelines like this: how to evolve schemas, how to automate and scale a pipeline like that, necessary tooling to grant permissions and allow sufficient debugging, coupling with key infrastructure already in place and so on.* Outside of my work with the team, I drafted what became a company-wide shift in software ownership called Stewardship. This was a fundamental shift from what Pleo previously did, from an everyone-maintains-everything model to a more clear concept of what it means to maintain software, and how to work with that within the business. This has led to reduced organizational friction and positively impacted things like peer review culture, how we form teams, incident management and response and more. Show less

As Head of Engineering, I steered the technical direction of the company to ensure the how and when of all the great things we wanted to do. As the team was small and interdisciplinary I wore many hats - from programming and DevOps, to architecture, internal process, security, Engineering roadmap, hiring, product discovery, UX and more. As Lead Developer of Duuoo.io I was responsible for the technical aspects of our software platform as a whole, and bridging between product requirements and technical solutions. I was also heading the agile process as Scrum Master, and working on the code itself as one of the developers. Mid-way through I proposed and spearheaded a large refactor of core components in the system, which helped improve modularity, speed of feature development and helped ready the platform transition towards OAuth and other kinds of authorization & authentication methods. At Mintebi I helped plan and build the software stack from the ground up: the frontend in React/Redux/ES6, the backend in NodeJS with integrations into Heroku, Compose, SendGrid, AWS and a variety of other services. On the backend we worked with RethinkDB and PostgreSQL. I was also responsible for the search engine at the core of the product, backed by ElasticSearch. I'm most proud of pioneering a change in the way we approached design and frontend work, by emphasizing user stories and bringing in our customers to discover the real pain points, and by integrating designers into the way we approached frontend work. Research for purposes of writing scientific articles, performing experiments and studies. My work also involved programming of necessary components for experiments and studies, finding participants, hosting experiments and studies and analysing results. Of particular note is a massively parallelized machine-learning experiment that I wrote in Python, to concurrently run large numbers of machine learning experiments, collect results and then store them for data analysis and statistics. The design & subsequent implementation of a large, scalable Java Enterprise platform for information analysis; business aspects of Port7 as a partner in the company; manegerial tasks, planning of projects, hiring programmers. One great success was the design and implementation of a prototype parsing pipeline that took natural language, turned it into domain-specific, context-aware tokens, and subsequently parsed that to both perform Machine Learning classification and produce a detailed 'meaning' of the original text. This was instrumental to the overall goals of the business. Show less

Hired twice a year for Copenhagen Fashion Week. Job included IT infrastructure setup, digital TV broadcasting, iTunes content publication, website maintenance and live multicast video streaming to extremely large outdoor screens and hotels. I am particuarly proud of the design & creation of a content pipeline for recording, editing and publishing video material used for broadcasts, which facilitated a workflow that was so efficient, people could watch the fashion show they had just seen live on the outside screens, mere moments after they came out of the building - something very few if any digital networks were able to do in 2005-2009. I started and ran an international guild of approximately 80 people for several years, in the online game World of Warcraft. As part of recruiting these 80+ individuals, I talked to several thousand people over the course of many months, filtering out those who did not fit the social atmosphere or practical requirements of what the guild wanted to accomplish. Once of a suitable size, I organized groups of 40 people to work together 5 days a week for up to 4 hours at a time; I also headed the strategic aspects of taking on and solving complex problems requiring the close cooperation of all 40 individuals involved. Running the guild involved solving daily conflicts between members of the guild, being responsible for the overall practical necessities of running such an organization, and also promoting and leading the guild in a way that inspired others. The guild was highly successful for many years and was known for its friendly and constructive atmosphere. In fact, some version of the guild still exists to this day, over 10 years later. Show less
