Lindsey Kayman is an outstanding health and safety professional at the cutting edge of this field. This assessment is based on my personal knowledge, having managed her for seventeen years, as well as her education, training, certification, and reputation in the field. As the Assistant Director of EOHSS, the University’s environmental health and safety department, Lindsey supervised a team of industrial hygienists, biosafety officers, an Environment of Care Coordinator and other safety professionals, while also taking on field and special assignments, or four of the six campuses of the nation’s largest independent academic health sciences institution, which includes a tertiary care psychiatric facility. In addition to being an active member of the EOHSS management team, Lindsey always took on additional responsibilities involving hands-on work at UMDNJ and was also involved in the occupational health and safety community at large. Lindsey and her team developed interactive online training modules for UMDNJ personnel. Another example is that she brought to the attention of the University a number of ventilation recommendations which could decrease costs and improve sustainability, and as a result she was appointed to serve on a University-wide green task force. Lindsey developed and produced a laboratory safety newsletter called Benchsmart, initially in print versions, and then in a web-based format. Lindsey has introduced new technological advances in the training programs of UMDNJ. For example, she transformed the registration and tracking of laboratory and other safety training programs from paper files to a computerized, on-line method. Lindsey’s proactive stance was always essential in allowing the University to successfully pass numerous accreditation and regulatory compliance inspections including JCAHO, DCA, PEOSH and AALAC. . She led the University efforts on important projects such as the Laboratory Safety Plan, Laboratory Design Guidelines, Procedures for High School Students working in UMDNJ laboratories, the Indoor Air Quality Program as well as an institution-wide clinical respiratory protection plan and training module. Lindsey is an active member, participating in various initiatives of many important associations, including the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) and the Campus Health, Safety, and Environmental Management Association (CSHEMA). . Lindsey was the 2009 recipient of the American Industrial Hygiene Association Outstanding Individual Contributor Award. I recommend Lindsey in the strongest possible terms, for her knowledge, skills, abilities, and complete devotion to the profession and to the institution she works for.

I had the opportunity to interact with Lindsey for nearly 20 years when she was the Assistant Director of UMDNJ’s department of Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety Services and I was the chairperson of Rutgers’ Biosafety Committee as well as a Principal Investigator in one of the many research buildings under her care. We frequently interacted about safety and environmental issues, both generally and specifically regarding our laboratory at the Center for Advanced Biotechnology & Medicine. Lindsey’s work had her contending with all sorts of issues at all hours (on each of three campuses), and she did so in a highly qualified and professional manner. She was the person who arrived at the scene of any incident, spoke with those present to gather information, and helped solve the problems at hand expeditiously and in as practical a manner as possible to best promote the productivity and safety of the employees. Lindsey is encyclopedic as well as extremely resourceful and reasonable, leading her to be highly respected by the diverse members of the university community. Lindsey is both a superb leader and a team player. She was a huge asset to UMDNJ and will be a huge asset wherever she goes.

The mission of EEF is to promote eco-literacy and stewardship of the environment by encouraging and helping individuals, communities, schools, religious and other organizations plan and hold engaging programs using film and multimedia events. EEF believes in the power of cinema as a vehicle for information on environmental reality and inspiration for action and hope of change. We have developed relationships with some of the most influential Environmental filmmakers in the country and continue to explore the entire arena of environmental films for the EEF roster. Over EcoCinema Cafe film festival format has had average audiences of over 2500 attendees over a 3 day period. These festivals also incorporate special events. Some examples include panel discussions, debates, interactive art exhibitions and student film campaigns. A major current focus is to combine my background and contacts from EEF and Environmental Health and Safety to develop modules and provide instruction for representatives from businesses, colleges and other organizations to conduct employee and student peer to peer training using EEF ecoliteracy modules that are currently in development.
