Almonte is a 52-bed hospital offering a wide variety of care such as 24-hour emergency services, acute medical and surgical care, perioperative care and complex continuing care. Most days, I am found working on the acute medicine unit tending to patients recovering from surgery or critical medical problems, such as hysterectomies and cardiac arrythmias. Almonte Hospital’s operating room is also used routinely for some of Ottawa’s top plastic surgeons. With that being said, when surgical complications arise or when patients need further monitoring or pain management, I am responsible for their post-operative needs and safe discharge home. I am also often the most senior nurse on the unit and responsible for the care of over 20 patients including administrative duties to coordinate care and interdisciplinary teamwork. Show less

Cardiology Nurse - Stress Testing

As a Registered Nurse in the Cardiology department, I provide nursing oversight to patients undergoing exercise cardiac stress testing and support during in-clinic procedures. I implement various cardiac protocols, operate specific equipment, and monitor the patient before, during and after the stress test. Further responsibilities include, but are not limited to, working closely with the providers and other clinical staff, monitoring electrocardiograms for abnormalities, checking blood pressures, managing self and resources effectively, applying critical thinking and considering alternatives in a multitask workload. After completing my licensing exam with the CNO, I was fortunate enough to gain quick permanent part-time employment at a Canadian hospital. On a typical day, I am responsible for coordinating and executing all aspects of nursing care on the in patient unit. Usually, I find myself caring for anywhere from 3 to 6 actively ill patients during the day and 8 patients at night. With that being said, I had to quickly learn how to delegate appropriate tasks to my fellow colleagues while working along side of approximately two other RNs during any given shift.Using my clinical expertise, I am responsible for comprehensive health assessments, performing safe and effective patient care and patient teaching, as well as discharge planning in order to support the patient’s continuity of care throughout their stay. After spending a short time in case management, I was given the opportunity to advance my role further as a Coordinator. Specifically, I work as a coordinator and liaison between OPH and our external workforce. As part of our broader COVID Case Management Team, we have a government workforce called Case & Contact Follow-Up Team Members that consist of Ian Martin workers and members from Stats Can. These team members provide support in COVID-19 contact follow-ups, contact investigations, case and contact daily monitoring, as well as file closures.On a day-to-day basis, I spend my time assessing referrals to my GWF team. I determine whether they are appropriate for someone to fulfill without a background in public health or health care and facilitate their completion. After completing my neurotoxin and dermal filler injection training with Dr. Jack Kolenda and ACE + Academia in May of this year (2017), I was personally selected to be his nursing assistant for a Restylane Preceptorship Training Program in partnership with GLO MDS. This training program was exclusive to well known certified medical cosmetic injectors, such as registered nurses and physicians. Dr. Kolenda received his credentials in Otolaryngology (head and neck surgery) at the University of Toronto and is a certified member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada as well as the American Board of Otolaryngology. He is considered to be one of the top facial plastic surgeons in Canada and owns his own practice at Verso Surgery Centre focusing on Head and Neck Surgery, Facial Plastic Surgery, Medical Cosmetic Aesthetics, and Robotic Hair Restoration. During this working experience, I was responsible for preparing numerous patients for their treatments. This role consisted of explaining the risks and benefits of the procedure to the patient, receiving informed consent, preparing the skin for injection, and keeping detailed documentation of the patient's treatment process. I was also responsible for preparing the product for injection and anticipating Dr. Kolenda's needs throughout each patient's treatment. This often meant having a new or different product prepared ahead of time in order to keep the program's schedule running smoothly. I was also given the opportunity to perform these treatments during the afternoon and was given my certificate in Restylane Skinboosters. I received positive feedback for my technique from observing physicians, including Dr. Kolenda. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Dr. Jack Kolenda and Gloria Hsu from GLO MDS and look forward to keeping my relationship with them as I progress in my career of medical aesthetics. In my final semester, I had the opportunity to develop close therapeutic relationships with a variety of patients working in a small community clinic. A typical day at the Carefor clinic consisted of reviewing patient charts, completing focused health assessments, performing required patient care, as well as additional patient teaching, documenting, and following up with respective health care professionals. Overall, I was given a great deal of autonomy and independence following a brief period of supervision. Although I often saw clients independently, teamwork was an important aspect to Carefor’s efficiently run clinic. It was not uncommon for patients to be seen ahead of time, or unexpectedly by myself or another RN/RPN in order to keep appointments on schedule.
