Although I never worked with Joe in a formal setting, I did have the chance to witness his genius at work, and did technically collaborate with him on a small project, wherein he took one of my photos of an elevated subway train in Bushwick and converted it into a soundscape -- or was it the other way around? At any rate, while at college, I would see him tinkering with all sorts gadgets, deconstructing various machines -- digital and analog -- and rewiring or rebuilding them in his image (at the whim of his potent imagination). Most notable for me was not his incredible wealth of knowledge about sound and sensory experience, but his genuine kindness and positive attitude. While it has been many years since we last saw each other in person, I am always excited to hear about his next project or auditory adventure. Cheers to Joe for making the world a more mellifluous -- or at least aurally interesting -- place.
