      Research project – The Effect of the Network Structure on the Stability of Modern Power Systems (2022) In the context of the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, congestion on transmission assets is a phenomenon which has gradually caught the attention of TSOs because it increases operational costs. Changing the network's structure by switching lines has been used to tackle transmission congestion; however, switching actions' effect on the grid's stability is critical for real-world applications. The research project enabled the study of the topological effect of the network structure on the transient stability of power systems. MATLAB and DIgSILENT models were integrated into an optimisation tool to identify the network structures with the highest robustness from the transient stability perspective. Implementing a robustness metric in the form of a fitness function allowed the use of genetic algorithms to find the solution to this discrete, highly non-linear optimisation problem. Show less

      The Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response Training System (SIGEN, by its Spanish acronym) has been intensively and successfully used to train Chilean government agencies and local authorities to manage and coordinate resources for disaster response (earthquakes, tsunamis, and flooding). After ten years of its release, without any software maintenance, an update was required to continue its operation. The software maintenance enabled the change of the text-based user interface to a modern interface integrating a GIS with spatial information of events and local assets.
