Archer Western - Heavy Civil I-95 Bridge Restoration Project (VDOT) • Layout of all aspects of bridge construction. The scope consisted of bridges built offsite in a “casting yard” in 3-4 units per span to be set in place in phases. Marking points for bridge geometry and setting elevations from girders to final grades. Other critical elements that were laid out are crane pick points, form bulkheads and ultimately reference points used for control as a means of positioning units during the erection phase. The I-95 Bridge Restoration was my first project with Archer Western Contractors. It consisted of replacing and widening eleven bridges along the I-95 corridor from Richmond to Henrico Co., crossing the following thoroughfares; Lombardy St., Overbrook Rd., Sherwood Ave., Robin hood Rd., Hermitage Rd., N. Boulevard, I-95 south-N. Boulevard exit ramp, Westwood Ave., Laburnum Ave. and north and southbound bridges over Upham Brook. This project required rigorous attention to detail as well as time management and prioritization skills. The scope of work consisted three basic categories; precast bridge unit erection, substructure and precast bridge construction. Work took place 24 hours a day the majority of the year. The most difficult and complex bridge by far was the Lombardy St. bridge. It consisted of 12 spans, one of which spanned three sets of railroad tracks. Widening of north and southbound lanes required 24 additional permanent columns as well as new wingwalls and approach slabs. Over a dozen additional temporary piers were built as shoring to support the existing bridge while several pier caps were demoed and recast in place. I-395 Seminary Rd. H.O.V. Ramp Bridge Project. Remove and replace Seminary Rd. bridge over I-395 adding an Integral ramp/bridge from the H.O.V. lanes. Widening of northbound lanes including the Bridge spanning Sanger Rd. and the off ramp to Seminary rd.. Pedestrian bridge crossing I-395 consisting of 6 spans. Show less
