I joined the medical secretary and growing administration team early September where I regained and built on my knowledge of SystmOne which I had used a few years beforehand. Within our team we oversee 5 surgeries all under the umbrella of ‘Portsdown Group Practice', although I am predominantly based at the Kingston Crescent site. Each day we receive patient related ‘tasks' in which the GP's or other clinical staff will send for us to action. This can be extremely varied from processing referrals to contacting patients. Because of the high amount of patients it is important for me to be able to work under pressure but to a high standard. Referrals are often dictated so using my medical terminology knowledge this comes in handy when typing these dictations. I have to be extremely flexible and focused in this role as quite often there are several balls up in the air at once! As a secretary I also handle medical report requests that come in, such as insurance requests, DVLA/DWP requests or copy of medical records. All have their own processes whether this is creating invoices and credit notes or using the system SOLA to acknowledge BACS or cheque receipts. Within this role I have to ensure I give attention to detail and deliver a high quality of care.

I made the move to China early 2019 and joined the ABIE School Centre. Within the centre I would prep and create lesson plans following a curriculum on the system named ‘My Little World'. Each lesson I would plan myself finding ways to enhance and enthuse the students. Each class are filled with twelve to fifteen students with each lesson running for two hours. I worked closely with the local members of staff to help them develop their English and ensure each class was understood and ran smoothly. We would also create corner activities for the children to make and create crafts in the last 15 minutes of class. I worked with children ages ranging from 2-10, using different methods of teaching depending on age and ability. Each class would vary in teachings from math, phonics, sentence structures or story telling. Whether it be parents days, demonstrations, graduations or day to day classes I am a very focused and dedicated teacher with a great bond with my students. I am currently studying for my TEFL which I hope to complete shortly.

As part of the Paediatric secretarial team I adhere to any patient queries whether this is by telephone or email. Within my role I work for three consultants specialising in Respiratory. The main bulk of my work is typing patient letters that have been dictated by the consultant and ensuring these letters are sent to the correct correspondence in a timely manner. I also print off patient clinic letters on a daily basis as there is such a vast turn over I have to make certain to keep on top of this. When receiving letters from outside of the hospital we are now scanning these into the patient notes via the EPRO system so that these are more accessible to consultants and other medical staff. I am extremely mindful of the importance of patient confidentiality and data protection as working in Paediatrics I have to be self-aware and to always ensure full protection for the children here. I work closely with another consultant in support of looking after the students here at Paediatrics. We have a group of 4th and 5th year students that attend every 8 weeks to learn and train on the ward, take classes and branch out to learn in the community (Community clinics, nursery and special schools). I issue each student a security card which is essential to move freely around the hospital. I also am in charge of the student calendar adding on sessions and engaging with outside NHS groups to ensure everything runs smoothly and student's calendars are updated with any changes. This also involves ensuring consultants are booked in for student sessions and exams. I collate student information and completed exam papers (ACCS) and send these off to Southampton. I use an internet based program named Blackboard where important speaking's or useful slides are added for student information and continuously updating this for each group.
