Project Focuses: (1) Determine the feasibility of adherence to dry weight adjustments and anti-hypertensive medication titration to achieve an out-of-dialysis-unit home vs. a dialysis unit systolic blood pressure <140 mmHg, (2) Compare the safety of apixaban vs. warfarin regarding major bleeding or clinically relevant non-major bleeding events in patients with atrial fibrillation and end-stage renal disease, and (3) Address knowledge gaps regarding palliative care among patients receiving maintenance dialysis. Clinical Research Coordinator for Drs. Chi-yuan Hsu and Mitchell R. Lunn, UCSF Division of Nephrology. I am conducting a clinical research study that explores the feasibility of performing home-based creatinine measurements using a hand held device and blood obtained from a fingerstick and urine albumin quantification using a urine albumin diagnostic urine cup and a smartphone app in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease. I have designed study protocols, enrollment questionnaires, informed consent, and post-experience survey, completed IRB-approval applications, recruited and monitored study participants, built data collection databases, data collection and analysis, and prepared NIH PowerPoint presentations. I have direct experience collecting and handling urine specimens as well. Show less

The Impact of a Hand Hygiene Film on Healthcare Workers Hand Hygiene at Ndola Central Hospital in Ndola, Zambia I designed and executed a mixed methods research project that explored the impact of a hand hygiene training film on the healthcare workers’ hand hygiene at Ndola Central Hospital in Ndola, Zambia. This project had a quasi-experimental study design with pre- and post-intervention questionnaires and qualitative interviews to explore the healthcare workers’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices of hand hygiene. My responsibilities included: distribute and collect pre- and post-film questionnaires to 650 healthcare workers, conduct semi-constructive interviews with 40 healthcare workers, observe and analyze the hospital's infection control procedures, organize and analyze qualitative and quantitative data, write manuscript, and act as liaison between Ndola Central Hospital and Guys' and St. Thomas Hospital in London, England. This project gave me the opportunity to further develop and apply my communication, research, analytical, organizational and management skills toward a global health patient safety and infection control initiative in a low-income country. Undergraduate Research Assistant for Dr. Lauren Benz, University of San Diego Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry I studied the adsorption of alcohols by Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework thin films in an Ultra High Vacuum for potential biofuel recovery applications. My responsibilities were to develop experiment ideas, data analysis, and final manuscript preparation. I had direct experience running a variety of scientific and analytical instruments and interpreting data using XPS, TPRS, SEM, UV-Visible Spectroscopy, IR, CASA, and Igor. This research in Dr. Benz's chemistry lab resulted in a published manuscript in the Langmuir Journal and a poster presentation at the American Chemical Society Conference in Denver, CO in March 2015. Clinical research assistant for Dr. Bjorg Thorsteinsdottir, Division of Primary Care Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. Characterized the clinical factors leading up to Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) in the very elderly patients (>75) and associate with patient important outcomes. I designed and executed a clinical research project on the outcomes of elderly patients on dialysis. It was a paid position (funded through the Small Grants Award program at the Mayo Clinic, Primary Care Internal Medicine Division, Department of Medicine) to design and build data spreadsheets, gather clinical data from various data sources in the electronic medical records as well as other clinical and national data banks, and analyze and interpret data. During the project I also had the opportunity to participate in developing the hypothesis and methods for the clinical research project, write an abstract, prepare an oral presentation and participate in manuscript preparation.
