Geometry is the starting point for my designs and I manipulate this to create illusions of movement and enhance the interplay of light and shadow. In this way my work engages the viewer, inviting further exploration. Clay was my first love and my work has naturally evolved to include marble, wood, concrete, bronze and glass, each offering different challenges of mutability and scale. My work has won numerous awards and is held in public and private collections worldwide.

    • Virtues Of Unity
      • 2009 - Present

For me, this installation is about togetherness and acceptance of each other, looking more at the virtues that unite us all, regardless of our cultural or religious backgrounds or the superficial differences in our appearances, such as the colour and texture of our skin and hair.Using the clay vessels as a metaphor for the human race, seems appropriate to me as we all come from the earth and it’s this same earth that we shall all return to.Each clay vessel in ‘Virtues of Unity’ has or will be made from clay that has been sourced from countries around the world – so it is my hope to acquire clay from every country around the world where it is possible to get it from. Each piece is titled to suggest a different virtue that associates us all with our aspirational valuesIf you would like to be part of this project and are able to help me source clay from your country please get in touch: info@halimacassell.com I am hoping to do a publication at the end of the project which will have all the stories of the clays being acquired for the installation. This will include – who got the clay, why they were/are in the country, how the clay was obtained, when they got the clay, where the clay came from, what the clay is traditionally used for and any technical information about the clay Show less
