The University of Maryland, Baltimore’s (UMB) CURE Scholars Program is a groundbreaking NIH National Cancer Institute-supported healthcare career pipeline program. The program’s family-style approach inspires youth from Southwest Baltimore to become leaders in the field, while providing essential social and emotional support for them and their families. As Executive Director I oversaw a passionate team of 8 full-time STEM educators, social workers, student success and community engagement professionals who managed day-to-day program operations for middle and high school programming.Some selected contributions include:♦Recruited a cohort of approximately 25-30 6th grade scholars a year from 3 partnering schools in Southwest Baltimore.♦Ensured that the program provides a high-quality curriculum along the pipeline as well as comprehensive evaluation processes that engage CURE scholars and their families.♦Convened the CURE Program Dream Team, a body of UMB staff, administrators, and faculty that serve on special programmatic committees and provided additional support for the program; Convened CURE’s Advisory Board quarterly.♦Orchestrated the program’s multiple funding streams in partnership with UMGCCC and School of Medicine faculty PI’s overseeing federal grants as well as administrative officers in UMB’s Office of the President.♦Cultivated community partnerships to connect scholars and their families with comprehensive support services, including those offered by UMB’s Office of Community Engagement and Community Engagement Center.♦In partnership with UMB CURE’s Office of Communications and Public Affairs, and Office of Philanthropy, supported the execution of large scale special events, communication strategies, and philanthropic initiatives.♦Developed the CURE Scholarship Fund for graduating scholars, including fund guidelines and selection processes.

I served as the program director for the office, covering program management areas such as Engaged Scholarship, Student Leadership and Development, Neighborhood and Community Programs, and Education. This involved performing quality control functions of office financials for approval, and drafting reports, proposals, and communication for division and university leadership. I managed all AmeriCorps VISTA sub-grant reporting from 2009 to 2017. I also advised various undergraduate initiatives to improve nutrition, health education, and clinical volunteering; I convened the faculty Community Based Learning Advisory Board.Some selected contributions include:♦Designed/implemented the Engaged Scholar Faculty and Community Fellows development program to train three faculty members and three community members annually with a budget of $20K.♦Earned the High Impact Award from Homewood Students Affairs Division in May 2017.♦Hired, supervised, and managed six full-time staff/one AmeriCorps VISTA member, overseeing programs connecting 1K student volunteers to ~90 non-profit organizations and local government entities.

As Interim Director, I headed a staff of 11 (three more full-time/one more part-time than in my Associate Director role), administering the budget, forecasting and mitigating risk, and overseeing office operations. I represented JHU at meetings of national and regional civic engagement organizations, including Campus Compact’s Research University Civic Engagement Network (TRUCEN), Mid-Atlantic Campus Compact’s Senior Advisory Group, and NASPA LEAD; I also represented the department internally in JHU’s Diversity Leadership Council’s Service-Learning Collaborative and attended student affairs division and sub-division director meetings.
