As a freshman, I worked with 2 other fellow classmates in semester-long project in the Learning Community Program at Flagler College. The program paired Research Topics in College Writing with Intro to Communications, and required a final project summarizing our work with a local non-profit organization. We chose Home Again St. Johns, a non-profit organization working to alleviate homelessness in St. Johns County by actively engaging homeless individuals in implementing their own return to self-sufficiency. We worked daily with the Director and assisted in the day-to-day operations of the organization, attended meetings on the issues that face the homeless, helped host charity functions, and came up with some ideas of our own on how to alleviate homelessness in the region. We brought our experiences from the community back to the classroom and spent the entire semester researching issues related to our non-profit and possible solutions. The final project was a presentation to the local community that educated them on our non-profit, informed them on the findings of our research, and our suggestions of possible solutions to the issues.
