The Principal Engineer role is strategically focused. Primarily about ensuring that the technical direction continues to support and enable the business over the long term. To achieve this requires an understanding of the business strategy of both Orion Health and it’s customers.I work with product directors, subject matter experts and other business stakeholders to support the development of this strategy. I also work directly with technical and business stakeholders at Orion Health’s customers to ensure that we’re building products that solve their problems. To ensure that the technical strategy is being successfully implemented I work closely with development and project implementation teams to ensure all participants are aware of the direction and drivers for it. As a key checkpoint I conduct design reviews and work with teams to align approaches to the direction when needed.I also build tools, demonstrators and proof of concept implementations to make it as easy as possible for teams to align to the technical strategy. As a senior member of the group I’ve also been involved in the planning and execution of several restructures, including running the consultation meetings.

    • Technical Development Director
      • Oct 2013 - Jun 2017

The Technical Development Director role is a hybrid role combining the people and delivery management of a small development group (4 teams) with the responsibility for technical direction and engineering leadership of that group. As well as the Team Leads who were my direct reports in this role, I worked closely with a Product Director who was responsible for the market alignment and product direction to align delivery capacity, technical direction and product roadmap. For this role I was managing 2 teams co-located with me in Auckland and another 2 in Christchurch. I coached my team leads growth as people managers as well as mentoring the emerging technical and people leaders in the wider team. I’m proud that several people from this group have gone on to other leadership roles within Orion Health. The product being developed was highly flexible, complex and fragile. I was able to balance the needs of product roadmap with the need to stabilise the existing product. Through this we were able to return the product to a state where our service teams knew it was safe to upgrade despite complex and highly varied configuration.
