Each year, I mentor a group of Biomedical Engineering college seniors for their capstone project. I guide them through the product development process and sponsor the fabrication of their prototypes. I coach the team on developing the Product specification, design specification, FMEA, patent search, design, materials selection, fabrication, testing, report and poster for final presentation Each year, I mentor a group of Biomedical Engineering college seniors for their capstone project. Co-developed the Online Rheometer for the injection molding and extrusion manufacturing processes. Design, fabricate, instrumentation, software development and testing. The Online Rheometer consists of an instrumented injection molding machine nozzle, a velocity controlled injection molding machine with an external data acquisition computer. The system measures the pressure drop in the nozzle, the velocity of the injection ram and determines Apparent Viscosity in real time during the injection molding process. In this way the system can be used in production quality control sensing changes in melt quality. The Online Rheometer also enabled the characterization of polymeric materials with high filler and large filler content. Example long glass fiber filled polypropylene used in the automotive industry cannot be characterized using conventional methods.
