When I returned from Zambia after serving in the Peace Corps, I knew my work was not complete. In 2013 I began fundraising with a $5000 goal in mind to help finish a community initiated school in the village of Chishi near where I served. This led to an invitation to speak at a local Maine school who wanted to learn more about how children live and learn in Zambia. From this overwhelmingly positive response and the drive to do more fundraising, my husband and co-founder Tom and I decided to take Build a School to the next level by becoming a registered 501-c3 non-profit. To date, we have finished the two-room schoolhouse and begun work on a teacher’s house. In 2015 we visited the site and were warmly welcomed by the community. With a materials donation from Lowe's, we brought with us 50 reusable chalk boards for the children to use during classes. In the spring of 2017 the school received a donation of art supplies from a local boy scout who was inspired by Build a School to want to collect supplies for 100 children. These supplies are now being used during classes as we are currently paying a stipend to have a teacher on site. We have a trip planned for April 2018 to reenergize ourselves and the community to finish the teacher's house. Build a School fundraises through the sale of t-shirts, donation yard sales, coin drives, art sales, and personal donations. Show less
