Completed GFP Protocol which was to create an artificial plasmid to insert into N. benthamiana to express the Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) gene along with agrobacterium that makes the plant glow. In this experiment, the goal would be for this plasmid to provide antibiotic resistance for the N. benthamiana plant. The plasmid contains kanamycin resistance gene and the TMV (tobacco mosaic virus), which we are hoping will provide us with a means in the future to produce medicine (easily manipulated in lab, not seed/pollen transmitted, high amounts of RNA/proteins). The main goal in the Grill Research Lab is vaccine development for rotavirus, which is responsible for 600,00 deaths/year in developing countries.

During my summer internship in the Horwitz lab, I was involved in assisting research projects including oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) of the hippocampus of rats and hibernating hamsters as well as OGD of the nucleus tractus solitarii (NTS) in hibernating species. When working with OGD of the NTS in hibernating species, the main goal was to determine ideal conditions for maximum neuro-protection from strokes. In addition, I was involved in creating buffer solutions, electrode work during the experiment process, as well as data entry and data analysis on Microsoft Excel. In terms of the various technical procedures I learned and practiced regularly, they include dissection of the NTS, tissue treatment, paraffin embedding, microtome sectioning, and cresyl violet staining.
