As a Research Biologist for Avian Research and Conservation Institute, I develop and implement research projects on rare and imperiled bird species to address immediate conservation needs. I collect and analyze data, author reports, and advise federal and state agencies based on my findings. I coordinate with partner organizations and train volunteers and technicians on field techniques.I believe education goes hand in hand with research, and I value opportunities to talk with the public to spark interest towards conservation and to share knowledge about the species around them.In addition to the skills gained as a Research Technician, I:- Conduct aerial surveys and VHF telemetry from single and twin-engine aircraft- Operate small motorized watercraft in open ocean and navigate through challenging situations (such as through flats in the backcountry of the Florida Keys)- Am comfortable driving manual and automatic transmission vehicles- Survey and identify vegetation to species- Survey prey fish with throw traps and identify to species- Regularly use non-motorized watercraft (kayaks, canoes) to conduct field work Show less

My responsibilities in this role are multifaceted:- Use social media as an avenue to communicate with and educate the public on ARCI's research and its impacts. I have increased constituent engagement overall by growing our Facebook following by 40% and reaching over 50K people with native video content. I field questions and create content that reaches a diverse audience.- Manage our CRM database and lead year-end donor-centered fundraising campaigns which have increased in ROI over the past two years. - Launched and manage a citizen science initiative, Eyes on Kites, to increase nest monitoring efforts of Swallow-tailed Kites across the species' range. This program educates and connects participants with kites nesting in close proximity to their homes. My goal is to foster appreciation for nature while addressing conservation concerns by collecting data that is, at present, lacking.- Currently rebranding the organization with an updated website and creating blog content. The project, Monitoring Bird and Rat Behavior to Improve Invasive Species Management, aimed to assist native Hawaiian songbird populations by determining and combating the effects of invasive insects and mammals on nesting birds. As a volunteer, I: - Collected baseline demographic data on Hawai’i ‘elepaio during pilot year of experimental predator control study. Delineated study plots, erected mist-net arrays, nest searched, spot-mapped territories, deployed game cameras, conducted target and passive mist-netting, and resighted color-banded individuals. - Conducted 170 point counts in diverse terrain for native and non-native forest birds - Cultivated interest of arthropods in school children as a Guide in the 2015 Bioblitz Show less
